Tikvat Majar: ("hope for tomorrow") is the Ken's youth movement. Children ages 6 to 14 are led by volunteer counselors, aged 16 to 20. This weekly Saturday program focuses on Jewish heritage, celebrating the holidays, athletics and folk dancing, social activities and other age appropriate activities. This is a real youth movement—the volunteer counselors plan and carry out the activities. They too grow and develop from this experience. It is also a bonding experience for them with their community.
Our Youth Director, who serves as advisor to the counselors, oversees the activities, provides long-term programming and develops educational schemes, leads the program. For many of our 150 youth members, this is their sole avenue of receiving and exploring their Jewish identity and heritage.
Aluma and Madrijim: Aluma are our counselors in training and the Madrijim are a selected group of counselors that form the pillar of our youth movement. All this teenagers maintain themselves under an ongoing capacitation and motivation. Experienced ex-madrijim as well as former leaders from several communities and professional Jewish leaders supports these groups which are crucial for our continuity.
Our program also encourages travel and study in Israel, where our young leaders participate in training seminars. Knowledge and appreciation of Israel is critical to maintain a link, which strengthens our Jewish Community.
Pinot and Maagal: They say that by the age of 5 a person's personality is determined. With this young impressionable age, is the future of the Jewish community. This group, the younger part of our youth programs, enable families to give their young children (2 to 5 year old) age appropriate Jewish education which incorporates both Jewish values and traditions and self-development skills which are so significant at this vulnerable age.
On our weekly Saturday programs, with years of experience and a deep Jewish heritage and culture in their hearts our professional teachers guide our preschoolers and kindergarten age children.
Javerim: This recently created group is a wonderful opportunity for all teenagers to be active in our organization without having to be a Madrij or counselor. We organize social meetings and activities, which provide a social boundary and community support. Our goal is to keep our youth busy in a healthy, educational and fun Jewish environment. The activities include: weekly meetings (on Wednesday evenings) with an adult professional counselor dealing with issues of Judaism, assimilation, divorce, drugs, violence, school and other issues of interests to this age group, bimonthly social gatherings and outings (such as camps, parties, bowling) and volunteer projects within the community.
Bogrim: The purpose of our college youth group is to continue our Jewish culture and traditions maintaining a social environment within our community and the Jewish Community at large. We maintain relationships with communities in South America and Orange County and we are looking for others. This group organizes social and cultural events for Jewish singles in the San Diego area.
