Q: What is Ken?
The KJC is a unique Jewish organization in San Diego. It was founded in 1980 by Latin Members of the Jewish Community with the goal of maintaining the Jewish culture under a secular organization.
Q: What does Ken mean?
The word Ken means, “yes” and it also means honest and truthful.
Q: For whom are the activities directed?
The KJC tries to direct its activities to all the age groups. However, the youth movement its our main activity. We believe that the children are our future. The KJC is the place where lifetime friendships are created.
Q: Who are the people responsible to give the activities?
The people in charge of the youth movement are: the youth director or sheliaj, the masquirut (a group of older madrijim or counselors) and the madrijim. The uniqueness is that all of the madrijim are volunteers. They spend all their Saturday working with other kids and they also meet once a week to plan the week activity and to have a time for them.
Q: Where is the Ken located? and Why?
The KJC is located at 4126 Executive Dr. in La Jolla. We are located at the JCC. Why? The JCC is growing and it meets the demand of a growing Jewish population. We benefit from the modern and expanded facilities.
Q: Are all the activities held there?
Our Saturday program is held at the JCC. Most of our activities are held there too unless our need is different.
Q: What activities are there?
Once you become a Ken member, you will enjoy activities for the whole family you will also benefit from the activities at the JCC. They have many programs that we should attend.
Q: Who can attend?
Our programs are targeting the Jewish community in general. You must be a member of the Ken to attend to our activities.
Q: Are there any activities for adults?
We have an indoor soccer league on Tuesday nights for adults. We encourage volunteers to create activities for adults like conferences, a disco night, Yom Hatzmaut, etc.
Q: How often do we get together?
The youth movement program gets together every week on Saturday from September to June. We also get together for every Jewish Holiday and special occasions.
Q: How do we get information?
You can get information by calling the Ken at 858/362-1161 and from now on, by visiting our site at kjc.org.
Q: How do I supply the Ken with my special needs? Will someone answer back or look into them?
If you have a need, it is best to put it in writing, send it to the Ken and it will be forwarded to the right person. You should get an answer promptly.
Q: Is there a group coordinator?
The youth director is the group coordinator. Many volunteers help him. We also have committees run by dedicated volunteers.
Q: Who is the Ken affiliated with?
The ken is not affiliated to any synagogue or entity. Our “tnua” or youth movement is in the process of being affiliated to Maccabi Hatzair.
Q: Can anyone attend to Ken? Any age?
The ken’s youth movement is for all the Jewish kids in our community. We offer family membership that includes membership to the JCC the only thing that we require is that the family will be affiliated to a Jewish synagogue or temple. The youth movement includes: Pinot (kids age 2 and 3) Maagal (kids age 4 and 5) the Tnua which is from ages 6 to 15 and then we have our Madrijim group from 16 to 21.
Q: Is there any cost to be a member? Why?
The cost involves: a registration (one time only), annual membership that includes membership to the JCC. Depending in your kid’s participation in our Saturday program the price varies.  Why? We have to pay corporate membership to the JCC for our members; we have a professional staff and office expenses. For our Saturday program we have teachers, specialty teachers to teach juguim, and materials for arts and crafts.
Q: Can I offer any volunteer work?
Volunteers are always welcome and we are in need of them.
Q: Is there any medical staff on hand?
There is no medical staff on hand. The youth director and the administrator are CPR and first aide certified.
Q: Are the attendees covered by any insurance?
Our program attendees are covered by a secondary medical insurance.
Q: Can the children walk in and out from the facilities?
The kids are in the program with the counselors, however the JCC is an open door policy.
Q: Are there any camping trips programed through the year?
We try to do several camping trips (tiyulim) during the year.
Q: Does medical staff accompany the campers?
No medical staff accompanies the campers in a tiyul. During our summer camp there is a medical nurse that comes to the week long camp.
Q: Are there programs for young adults? Newlyweds?
We believe that if more volunteers would be involved, there would be programs for everybody. We encourage you to participate in our activities and become a volunteer for a specific area. This will allow al of us to have more activities for every age group.
